Current Developments in Endoscopic Suturing

Endoscopic suturing is an advanced endoscopic technique utilizing a minimally-invasive approach for the correction of gastrointestinal wall defects. Currently, the OverstitchTM endoscopic suturing system (Apollo Endosurgery Inc., Austin, Texas) is the only endoscopic suturing system approved in the United States by the FDA. Though its applications remain experimental, there is a burgeoning body of literature demonstrating a variety of therapeutic interventions utilizing endoscopic suturing. From closure of mucosal/submucosal defects, gastrointestinal perforations and fistulae, to closure of natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) sites and even applications in endoscopic bariatrics, a number of innovative techniques are being developed to make use of this technique. In this review, we provide an overview of the latest developments in endoscopic suturing, with specific focus on the OverstitchTM endoscopic suturing system.
